Call for Artists
Following last month’s announcement to bring the National Festival of Illustration to Hartlepool, Cleveland College of Art & Design is now calling for artists to submit papers for presentation at the Festival symposium.
Illustrators, comic artists, cartoonists and academics are invited to put forward their written papers on the theme of ‘The Power of Illustration’, and if successful will be presented as part of the two-day symposium and also published in December.
Proposals are welcome which explore the perceived tension between mark making and digital traditions, and which debate whether the ‘Golden Age of Illustration’ is cyclical.
These themes will also be developed through a series of sessions at the Symposium, drawing the thread between now and the future of the industry.
The deadline for sending abstracts is 10 May, with a final deadline for submitting full papers of 29 May.
Ben Clowes, Programme Leader, BA (Hons) Illustration for Commercial Application, said: “This is a great opportunity to bring together illustrators, creatives and academics from across the UK to discuss the influences over the decades which have resulted in a renaissance in illustration today.”
The Symposium will be supported by an exhibition of illustrators from across the world, including New York and Madrid, with the festival expected to draw a wide audience and hundreds of visitors from across UK to celebrate all things illustration, and an opportunity for artists to sell their work at the illustrators market.
Lead by Cleveland College of Art & Design, in collaboration with Hartlepool Borough Council and Seven Stories, the Festival of Illustration is a free month-long event in Hartlepool which will bring world-renowned illustrators, cartoonists and comic artists to the town with exhibitions, a symposium, illustrators market, masterclasses, street market, storytelling and workshops.
