Rob Flowers // Illustrator

Rob will be talking about his favourite stuff, his toy collection and how that influences his work. He will also be sharing some of his favourite entries from his new book, Festival Folk. Rob's work has been described as 'trippy.... as if you took a whole load of acid, ate too much candyfloss and went on the waltzers at your town's local fair. It's all a bit much, borderline grotesque, but you had a brilliant time." Rob channels his love for ghoulish characters, psychedelic colours, and anthropomorphic food into his bright and brilliant work. To the backdrop of a hoard of vintage action figures and Happy Meal toys, he creates his illustrations that embody this obvious love for humour and characters. There seems to never be a dull moment in his studio nor a dull millimetre in his acidically vibrant images. "Ideally I’d like to live in a land of hamburger patches, milkshake volcanoes and fillet-o-fish lakes." Keith Robson // Illustrator

The Beano / The Dandy – I’ll Never Stop Drawing Following Art College here in Hartlepool I was employed in the art department of Dundee comic publishers D.C.Thomson, a truly wonderful training environment where I learned ‘on the job’ working on most of their comics. Becoming freelance in 1974, I have (from necessity!) tackled a huge diversity of jobs including school textbooks, pre school television, children’s storybooks, and model-making for animated TV series. I have stayed with comics, throughout, latterly writing and drawing ‘Jonah’ in ‘Dandy’ and ‘General Jumbo’ for ‘Beano’. In 2006 I illustrated ‘Time Tram Dundee’, a Heritage Lottery Funded history of Dundee. This involved many local school visits, which I greatly enjoyed and inspired me to become a teacher. I qualified as a Cert Ed in 2008, initially working with special needs children and teenagers with emotional issues. I also teach in local primary schools, run several drawing groups, including 'Dabble in Art' for the club, and continue as an illustrator. 13:15 – 14:00 BST The Northern School of Art Lecture Theatre Church Square Hartlepool TS24 7EX
