Hartlepool Festival of Illustration is launched
Throughout June 2015 Hartlepool will become the home of world-renowned illustrators, cartoonists and comic artists.
Cleveland College of Art & Design (CCAD) is leading this major event that will attract thousands of children and young people, families, students and artists from across the North East and the rest of the UK to the free event.
The Festival of Illustration will start on 4 June this year and is a collaboration between CCAD, Hartlepool Borough Council and Seven Stories – the National Centre for Children’s Books along with significant support from major publishers and illustrators – supported by The Arts Council England. Month long exhibitions will take place at the Hartlepool Art Gallery and Central Library; there will be a symposium on 5th June followed by master classes, by leading artists, for young and aspiring artists on the 6th; and children will be able to take part in storytelling and drawing events in schools and libraries across the whole month. In the run up to the Festival CCAD will be hosting “Draw your Superhero” sessions in Middleton Grange.
With the logo created by popular illustrator, Drew Millward, the Festival also includes a number of events, which are free to attend:
- A major exhibition of international illustrators work including Ralph Steadman, John McCrea (Marvel), Will Simpson (Game of Thrones) and Chris Mould amongst many others.
- Many of these artists will be taking part in the events on 5th & 6th June
- An illustrators market in Church Square, where visitors can buy work from exciting artists from around the country.
- Children’s workshops and storytelling in schools and libraries across Hartlepool
- Exhibition by the Book Sniffer in the Central Library including book launch.
Pat Chapman, Head of Employability & Enterprise at CCAD, said: “This is an incredibly exciting event for CCAD and Hartlepool. It will give people, especially young people, the chance to experience the original artwork behind familiar images in books and comics and take part in drawing workshops where they will take home their own art. This Festival is part of our commitment to the development of Hartlepool and Church Street in particular, as a cultural and creative centre and visitor attraction – good for people and good for business and employment.”
Ben Clowes Programme Leader for BA (Hons) Illustration for Commercial Application said “The response from leading illustrators, publishers and agents to this Festival, and to our course has been incredible and gives Hartlepool the amazing opportunity to show the country what a creative area we live in and how we at CCAD are contributing to the regions Creative Industries”
