NORTHERN FESTIVAL OF ILLUSTRATION & CROSSING THE TEES BOOK FESTIVAL ILLUSTRATOR-IN-RESIDENCE OPPORTUNITY The 2019 Northern Festival of Illustration (1st June to 20th July) is the third major showcase for and celebration of illustration organised and led by the Northern School of Art. Centred on our campus and Hartlepool Art Gallery, the Festival celebrates all aspects of illustration and features works by UK and international illustrators (Ralph Steadman, Sir Ridley Scott, Gerald Scarfe, Gabriel Moreno and many more) and includes a weekend symposium attracting some of the best known illustrators working today – including Chris Riddell, John Mcrea (Batman and Spiderman) and Tom Hovey (GBBO illustrator). The two previous festivals attracted over 73,000 visitors and involved more than 1200 people from across the Tees Valley in workshops for young people and families. The first Festival won the North East Culture Awards Tees Valley Event of the Year in 2015. You can find information about the 2017 event at www.festivalofillustration.com We will go truly international in 2019 with the launch of The Northern Illustration Prize, in collaboration with the Association of Illustrators, with generous support from The Gillian Dickinson Trust. Crossing the Tees Book Festival (8th – 22nd June) returns for its sixth year in June 2019 having grown from a collaboration between Middlesbrough and Stockton library authorities to encompass the five Tees authorities of Middlesbrough, Stockton, Hartlepool, Darlington and Redcar & Cleveland. The festival is hosted in libraries across the region and includes author events, writing workshops, children’s authors, historical costume presentations, poetry, murder mystery evenings and family events. 2019’s programme (www.crossingthetees.org) will include authors LJ Ross, Stephen Booth and Jodi Tayor, performance poetry from Kate Fox and Rowan McCabe, children’s authors Ross MacKenzie and Sufiya Ahmed, plus History Wardrobe, the Ultimate Book Quiz for Schools and Henry Jeffrey’s Empire of Booze. Illustrator-in-Residence Brief As part of the Northern Festival of Illustration outreach and engagement programme, we are offering a residency opportunity for an artist illustrator to work across Tees Valley Libraries as part of the Crossing the Tees Book Festival. The copyright of all work produced during the residency period will remain with the artist illustrator, but the Northern School of Art and Crossing the Tees Book Festival reserve the right to use images of the work for marketing and publicity (you will be credited in these instances).
